Abstract: 

It’s been 13 years since I started my master’s program and 4 years since getting a PhD. Ever since and still, there have been high-level decisions that I have had to make, that affects a lot more on my life than the hyperparameters of my models, that are more difficult to find information about. In this talk, I will present a case study — a retro on the decisions. Why doing a PhD in the UK, not in the US? Why music, and why music classification? Why deep learning? Why working in a company, not in university, after graduation? Although the actual choices would be different among persons, similar questions are given to everyone. Some of my choices have been slightly less typical. We will see if these data points can provide some novel information to the audience. 

Bio:

Keunwoo Choi is a AI Research Director of Gaudio Lab where he leads a music and audio AI research team. He was a research scientist in ByteDance/TikTok and Spotify in the USA, after earning his PhD degree in Queen Mary University of London, 2018. He has worked on music classification / recommendation, automatic transcription, and music source separation as well as 3D audio.
